Must Visit World Heritage Sites of Nepal

Nepal is a beautiful country enrich in natural resources and Himalayas along with that there are amazing and popular four UNESCO World Heritage Sites listed since 1979. These world heritage sites fall under cultural and natural category. The cultural category comprises of all the monuments of Kathmandu Valley (Boudhanath, Swayambhu, Pashupatinath, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, Bhakatapur Durbar Square and Changunarayan. Whereas natural category comprises of famous destination of Nepal; Sagarmatha National Park another is Chitwan national park and Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha. People from all over the world come to visit these historical, cultural and beautiful World Heritage Sites of Nepal. The below mentioned are the must visit world heritage sites while you are in Nepal.

1. Pashupatinath:
This is the holiest temple for all Hindus from worldwide and is considered as the patron deity of Nepal. This temple was built on 1697 A.D and has pagoda style two-tiered golden roof along with four silver doors having phallic idol on each one. The Bagmati River also flows through the temple where the ritual of crematorium is performed. Many religious people as well as the foreign visitors can be seen around the temple premises. If we go to the temple on evening time we can see the daily performance done by the priest and this is one of the beautiful and peaceful activity to observe. The activities of temple can be viewed from the back of temple by the foreigners.

2. Swayambhunath:
This temple is located in hillock of Kathmandu valley from where we can see the beautiful views of Kathmandu valley. This is one of the popular Buddhist temple where we can see Buddhist monks and pilgrims during our visit. Also, we can see Hindu temple on the surrounding of Swoyambhu. We can see many monkeys around the temple due to which foreigners name this temple as “Monkey temple.” This is one of the nearest and must visit world heritage site.

3. Boudhanath:
This is also the Buddhist temple, biggest stupa of Nepal built on 5th century A.D. This temple is very beautiful and we can enjoy the surroundings and the view of temple from the roof top restaurants nearby. In the temple there are 108 small icons of Buddha, Bodhisattvas and female deities. And we can see the 360 round of praying wheels on which the Buddhist pray while taking round of Boudhanath.

4. Kathmandu Durbar Square:
This is a historical place lying in the heart of Kathmandu city consisting of different monuments like Taleju Temple, Krishna temple Basantapur Durbar, Kasthamandap, Hanuman statute, Big Bell, Kal Bhairav, Kumari Ghar and so on. All these monuments were erected here from the 1484 – 1911 A.D. We can enjoy visiting all these monuments nearby and so many people, shops, restaurants nearby along with the sight of monuments is amazing to watch around. Also the statue of Hanuman, Kal Bhairav, and the big bells are major attractions with all other monuments.

5. Patan Durbar Square:
This is also a historical place which lies in the Lalitpur district. Patan is known as the city of arts and here we can see the monuments from medieval period from 16th to 18th century. This place is so beautiful with the amazing view of Krishna Mandir, Main Chowks, and Golden Temple and so on. We can learn about the history of Nepal and the houses style of inhabitant of Newar people back in medieval period around the museum of Patan Durbar.

6. Bhaktapur Durbar Square:
This is a historical place lying in Bhaktapur famous for the Newar people cuisine, handicrafts, artifacts and beautiful community along with the durbar square. We can visit museum, observe the people around, settlement of Newar community. And while we are in Bhaktapur we can make the pottery as well.

7. Changu Narayan:
This is one of the oldest Hindu temple of Nepal with the historical and religious importance. The temple is built in two – tiered pagoda style located in the hills and nearby Newar community is a wonderful place one will enjoy visiting. The temple was first built in medieval period which is guarded on all sides by mythical beats.

8. Lumbini:
This is also one of the famous temple for Buddhist where Lord Buddha was born. Millions of tourists visit Lumbini every year for praying as well as to visit birthplace of Guatam Buddha. There is Mayadevi temple (birthplace of Lord Buddha), burning flame pillar erected by Emperor Ashoka, Peace stupa and monasteries built by different countries in respect of Lord Buddha. The Lumbini lies in the southern part of Nepal, terai region and it is usually hot (upto 40 degree Celsius) and the atmosphere and surrounding is very calm, peaceful to visit and stay.

9. Chitwan National Park:
This is one of the popular national park rich in flora, fauna and wildlife which inclues 600 plant species, 526 birds, 50 mammals and 49 reptiles. During the visit to national park we can see the one – horned rhino and lucky ones can get to see Royal Bengal Tigers. We can enjoy the Tharu culture in Chitwan and then do the activities like elephant riding, visiting elephant breeding center, canoeing, and bird watching, jeep drive in jungle and enjoying Tharu dance.
